Why AWS Native Matters
Third-party backup solutions often require agents, custom integrations, and data egress from AWS—adding complexity, cost, and security risks. Air Gap Recover is built entirely on AWS infrastructure, using native AWS services and APIs for backup, replication, and recovery.
Native Snapshot Sharing: The Key Differentiator
Unlike Veeam, Commvault, or Rubrik, Air Gap Recover uses AWS's native snapshot sharing capabilities—no proprietary backup formats, no agents, no third-party backup infrastructure.
EBS Snapshot Sharing
- Unlimited Cross-Account Protection - Share snapshots to unlimited AWS accounts for air-gapped isolation
- Cross-Region DR - Copy encrypted snapshots across regions with zero data egress fees (within AWS)
- Customer-Managed Encryption - Full control over KMS keys, encrypted snapshots never leave AWS
- DLM Automation - Set-and-forget Data Lifecycle Manager policies for automated backups and retention
- Instant Recovery - Launch EC2 instances directly from snapshots in minutes, not hours
RDS Snapshot Sharing
- Native Cross-Account Sharing - Share RDS snapshots to isolated backup accounts with built-in encryption
- Automated Snapshot Copying - Use AWS Backup or custom Lambda functions to automate cross-account replication
- Zero Downtime Recovery - Restore databases from snapshots with full performance immediately
- Multi-Engine Support - Works with MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, MariaDB, Aurora
Cost Efficiency vs Traditional Backup Software
Air Gap Recover (AWS Native)
- Pay only for AWS snapshot storage ($0.05/GB/month for EBS)
- No backup software licensing fees
- No backup infrastructure to provision or manage
- No data egress charges (snapshots stay in AWS)
- No per-VM or per-TB pricing tiers
Veeam/Commvault/Rubrik
- Per-VM or per-TB licensing (typically $50-200/VM/year)
- Backup infrastructure costs (EC2, storage, bandwidth)
- Data egress fees to third-party repositories
- Agent management and patching overhead
- Proprietary backup formats requiring conversion for recovery
Real-world savings: For 100 VMs with 10TB total storage, Air Gap Recover costs approximately $500/month (storage only), while traditional backup software can cost $5,000-20,000/month (licensing + infrastructure).
Supported AWS Services
Compute
- EC2 Instances - EBS snapshot-based backups with application-consistent snapshots
- EC2 Auto Scaling Groups - Backup launch configurations and scaling policies

- EBS Volumes - Incremental snapshot backups with point-in-time recovery
- EFS File Systems - AWS Backup integration for file system protection
- S3 Buckets - Object versioning and cross-region replication
- FSx for Windows/Lustre - Native backup integration
Databases
- RDS - Automated snapshots for MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, MariaDB
- Aurora - Cluster snapshots with continuous backup to S3
- DocumentDB - MongoDB-compatible database snapshots
- Neptune - Graph database snapshots
- DynamoDB - On-demand and continuous backups
Native Integration Benefits
No Agents Required
Air Gap Recover uses AWS APIs to create snapshots and backups—no agents to install, patch, or manage. This eliminates a major operational burden and attack surface.
Application-Consistent Snapshots
For supported services, we use AWS's native application-consistent snapshot capabilities. Database transactions are flushed, file system buffers are synced, and backups are crash-consistent or better.
Incremental Forever
AWS EBS and RDS snapshots are inherently incremental—only changed blocks are stored. This dramatically reduces storage costs and snapshot time compared to full image backups.
Fast Recovery
Because backups are native AWS snapshots, recovery is fast:
- Launch new EC2 instances directly from EBS snapshots
- Restore RDS databases with full performance immediately
- Mount EFS file systems with no rehydration
AWS Marketplace Integration
Air Gap Recover is available in AWS Marketplace with:
- Consolidated billing through your AWS account
- AWS Marketplace Private Offers for enterprise agreements
- Integration with AWS Control Tower and Organizations
- Compatible with AWS Credits and EDPs
Deployment Models
Cross-Account Backup
Air Gap Recover runs in a separate AWS account (or Organization) for isolation. It uses IAM cross-account roles to create snapshots in your production account and copy them to the backup account.
CloudFormation Automation
Deploy Air Gap Recover using AWS CloudFormation or Terraform. Infrastructure as Code (IaC) makes setup repeatable and auditable.
AWS Control Tower
For multi-account environments, integrate with AWS Control Tower to automatically protect new accounts as they're created.
